Treatment Logistics and Travel
Committing to ketamine or esketamine therapy involves a thorough plan assessment, repeated clinical visits, and ongoing follow-up. For Elkton residents, rural travel distances to central Maryland clinics can be demanding. Factors like severe storms, winter snow and ice, and heavy Marylandpolis traffic can impact travel reliability. While telehealth is often used to support initial evaluations and psychiatric follow-ups, it does not establish home treatment availability.
Clinical Observation and Safety
Spravato is never administered at home; it must be taken in a certified medical office under the Spravato REMS program. Following administration of Spravato or in-clinic IV/IM ketamine, patients require at least two hours of observation. Due to temporary sedative effects, patients are not allowed to drive until the next day after a restful sleep, making a responsible adult pickup mandatory. Some clinicians prescribe compounded ketamine for home use, but these formulations are not FDA-approved for psychiatric care, and the FDA warns about risks without on-site monitoring.
